Exciting Year for Adaptive Snowsports
The Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports (VISAS) is preparing for an exciting year in 2010. VISAS offer people with physical or mental disabilities the chance to enjoy alpine or Nordic skiing as well as snowboarding.
With 80-plus volunteer instructors and the generous support of Mount Washington Alpine Resort, instruction is offered daily. It is a very rewarding program for both students and instructors.
Some of the annual events are; Instructor Training in December, Learn to Ski Festival (Jan. 3-7) and four days of instruction and fun for 35 new students. The Herb Bradley Coca-Cola Classic on Feb. 7 is our major fundraiser for the year. Sponsored teams participate in a fun race day. For the last 2 years we have held a Veterans Week giving instruction to soldiers from across Canada.
This year the Resort will be hosting the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) National Festival March 21 - 26. This Event brings together students and instructors from across the country. Also on March 25 - 28 the Canadian National Disabled Championships and IPC/Noram Races will be held at the Resort. This will be a great opportunity to watch these inspiring National and International Athletes in action, some of them coming straight from the Paralympics.
VISAS welcomes new volunteers and students. If you would like to see what we do, stop by the club room on the lower level of the Alpine Lodge.
